Re: High Calcium Content in Water
Too much calcium in a birds diet can cause kidney problems. Especially if they are not exposed to enough sunlight. Liquid calcium supplements are no good in my opinion either. Some birds will eat cuttle fish or you can have birds like mine that ignore it. I use finely ground oyster shell added to th...

Re: A thread for AJ and Billie about hormonal behaviour.
Hey Peter...sorry I've been absent. Busy time of year. My alexandrine boy has just now started mating behavior. He is only 8 months old so it wasn't expected at all. Thankfully he's taken up with one of his toys to regurgitate on and not me. I've done a bunch of research on foods related to mating b...

Re: A Thread For Budgie Fans
The little one that was lying down to sleep went to the rainbow bridge last night. I know she had been attempting to eat, she had seed stuck to her beak. The other one has labored breathing now too. No discharge from the nares or beak, and is a bit more active today. We completed the rescue of the o...

A very wise person once told me..."nobody cores the apples for the birds in the wild, so why should I?" No offense, but I'm not sure if I'm buying that. Nobody provides the birds in the wild with guaranteed food and shelter from the extreme cold/heat either, so why should I? Nobody takes ...

Re: Coucou's fallen tail
Does coucou spend more time than usual preening his tail feathers? Also, does he try to fly and land awkwardly a lot? These could contribute to his tail looking that way. Loss of the central tail feathers is normal during a molt...but loss of all of his tail feathers at one time is not. How much tim...

So sorry for the delayed response. It's been a busy day for sure. I put the little budgie that didn't make it in a basket last night. I watched his breathing slow down. I left him there because I couldn't watch him take his last breath. He was laying on his side when I left him. When I got up this m...

100% natural fruit juices are not bad in small quantities. It's the added sugar you want to avoid and apple cider which is fermented, not cooked, and contains pulp. Apple seeds do contain trace amounts of cyanide. A very very very small amount. While I wouldn't go and feed a handful of seeds to my b...

I too am very happy for you taking a stand against that pet shop. It may be that they had no idea. But now they do...and maybe they'll stop getting birds from that particular supplier. It's progress :D As for another bird from them...I would politely decline. The risk as Claire stated, is too great ...

Hey Donovan,
It could be the cage. Or it could be the approaching breeding season. Or hopefully the part missing from the nail clippers wasn't small enough that he swallowed it. It wasn't was it?

OK MissK...I need your help. Went on a rescue today. Pulled some birds out of deplorable conditions. Two of them were, you guessed it, budgies. Ill get a pic up for you later. These two are so sweet. Anyway, what do I need to put in their cage? I put some guava branches, and some palm fronds so far....

My birds love these!!! They also make a bigger version in the guinea pig section at petco. Just make sure the ones you get are the plastic bells inside and not the older ball bearing style.

Riccardo, the only way pet shops like that will stop existing, is when they have no suppliers. Unfortunately some breeders will sell their animals to any pet shop just to make money. I'm not sure how you should proceed as I am I the U.S. maybe molossus can give some input here.

Are the eyes dilating yet? If no, then less than 6 months. If they are just starting to lighten around the edges of the iris than maybe 7-8 months. If they can completely dilate, than over 9 months. My male said his first word at around 5 months. If they are talked to a lot it is possible. But count...
