Poisonous branches and trees?

I just put a coral branch in my birds cage, as it makes a good perch, however i can't find anywhere that tells me if its safe or toxic? Can anyone help me out? Also i have a grape vine, would hanging that in his cage be alright? Should i pull the leaves off the vine and just hang the bundles of grap...

Re: Can birds 'bond' with more than one person?

This is very exciting news! I do hope that he begins to favour me one day! But if he doesn't then I guess that's okay too :)

Can birds 'bond' with more than one person?

Hi guys, i know i've been posting a lot lately, but i just have so many questions about my new bird!! I use the term 'bond' lightely as i don't think i mean in that way that it is being perceived. My bird without a doubt prefers my dad, no questions asked. My dad has never spoken to Joey or interact...

Re: Establishing yourself as 'top bird'

That is definitely good news! I try to keep him away from me when he acts like this, but he just comes straight back to me. So it gets a bit tricky at times.
I'll tough it out though, and hope that he returns to his affectionate self as soon as possible!!
Thanks for your reply! :D

Re: Establishing yourself as 'top bird'

Thanks so much for your reply! I too come from a horsey background and I am much more used to them then birds. I'll definitely try your positive reinforcement methods and the way you broke down what I was doing makes a lot of sense now! He is a super friendly bird which makes me think his dominance ...

Establishing yourself as 'top bird'

Hi guys, I'm in desperate need of help, my Alexandrine is about 10-12 weeks old and he thinks he is top bird, well he doesn't think this; he is. I am trying so hard to change this but i really need some help. He is extra protective of his play stand, cage, toys and food. Even if i am bringing more f...

A question about biting!

Now i know there are a lot of posts on here about biting, however none really seem to be what i'm after. My bird is only new to family, and he seems to be a little hand shy. He is fine to step up onto it, and take treats out of it and even fly to it, however when i move my hands at all he starts to ...

Re: Turning a male's bird into a female's?

Thanks so much everyone for the help! I'll definitely try out the methods suggested! My dad has completely agreed to have absolutely nothing to do with Joey, as i am moving out in a few months time so its probably for the best that they don't bond! I've only had him home for two days, and already he...

My bird hates his cage

My bird absolutely hates being in his cage, its not particularly small, but its not all that large. I can't get him a bigger cage until i move. He really won't sit still in it, and i'm so afraid he is going to hurt himself. Luckily for him he doesn't have to be in it too often, but there are some da...

I was thinking of doing that haha my dad is at work most of the time so it will just be me and
my Joey!
I hope he isn't hard-wired to prefer males!
But I'm going to try my best to make him prefer me!! Haha thanks for your reply!

Turning a male's bird into a female's?

My male bird is 12 weeks old, and i got him yesterday. When we were at the breeder he was most surprised with the way the bird sat on me as he was a males bird. Taking this as i good sign i took him home. However this morning when i got up, my bird jumped off me and flew straight to my dad, whom he ...

Treats for training!

What do you feed your bird to motivate them? I feed mine corn but i'm finding it goes off quicker than he can eat an entire cob :/ Any other suggestions?

Re: Is having two IRNs a good idea?

Thanks for all your replies! I don't think 'bond' was the right word choice to use :? I haven't been able to spend that much time with my bird in the last few days as school has been pretty crazy, but i'm slowly getting more and more time back. Currently he has access to food 24/7, but i was reading...

Is having two IRNs a good idea?

I got a 1 year old male IRN about 2 months ago, he is semi hand-trained he just prefers to do his own thing rather than sit with me. My mum and i had planned to get a bird from a family friend but it seemed as though they were not going to be able to breed this breeding season so we ended up getting...

Re: My IRN refuses to spend time with me...

He loves corn and i do use that as an incentive however he doesnt love it enough to stay with me. I have taught him how to wave and to turn around but i want to tame him now, not train him :/
Thanks for your feedback!

My IRN refuses to spend time with me...

I have had my one year old IRN for a while now, but he refuses to stay with me for longer than a few seconds. He doesn't seem afraid but he just doesn't like me... I was wondering if its okay to gently hold him and comfort in (sort of forcing him to spend time with me) I don't want to be cruel or an...

Beds and bedding

I want to give my bird the best cage possible, he doesn't spend much time in it whch is good, however he does sleep in there. When i bought him i got him off a breeder who said that IRN's may like beds instead of perches, so like little hammock type things that you put in the cage, or a wooden box w...

How long did it take you and your irn to bond?

Hi there, I have a one year old untamed IRN who I've had for about 3-4 weeks now. I've taught him heaps of tricks and he happily climbs onto my finger when I ask and eats treats out of my hand. However he still likes his play gyms and various other perches more than he likes me. He will never sit on...

When should i put him to bed?

I've heard that Indian Ringnecks need around 12 hours of sleep a day. I often see him fighting to keep his eyes open in the middle of the day and was wondering when i see this if i should put him in his cage and let him sleep, or let him stay out on his perches? I've only had my IRN for about a week...
