Re: Midwest bird &exotic animal hospital

Another tid bit of information I found. Remove Heavy Metals Heavy metal poisoning is a concern with birds kept in captivity. Birds can get zinc or lead poisoning from their cages, toys and other items. This recipe can be incorporated into a bird's diet in small amounts to assist the body in ridding ...

For large growth ideas you might look into the poultry industry and their advances in size, probably steroid boost of some description, which I wouldn't recommend. But I'm sure you could get diet ideas.

Is the bird old enough to molt, is it caged with another bird? If it is in molt you might try spritzing with water and a drop or two of olive oil to relieve itching. If its being plucked by another bird, separate them. What diet do you feed?

The breeder I got my irn from had a Quaker as a cage mate and they got along well. Quakers are a lot like irn's in personality though. Maybe too much so.

You may want to try to catch her when she is being quiet, then go into the room, just ignore the racket as much as you can. Try to extend the quiet time before entering the room.

Keep more than one set of dishes then while one bird is at one dish the other will have a chance to eat, you may end up having to place them in separate cages.

You might try painting the very end of the stick a bright color the interest the bird. Don't let him bite it, just touch it.

Speak to her before you enter the room. When you get close enough that she starts fussing freeze, then don't retreat until she gets quiet again. Other people would definitely benefit from giving him his favorite treat. If you can introduce a few people to him before you leave him it would probably help. The main thing with new people is to not surprise the bird. I had an uncle that always had visitors put on the same ball cap just so the bir...

You might try putting your finger or hand right on the end of the perch, then offer a treat with the other hand gradually luring him a little further onto your hand. Maybe at first just get him to reach over your hand. Be patient, you may want to chop those nuts so he won't fill up before you make p...

Trained parrot site is a very good information source, you just have to remember, those birds have been in training for a very long time. That said, when you go into the room with your bird, go far enough to get where he squawks then stop, don't leave until he settles down. Then leave the room, wait...

I've seen many birds that would lay down to rest, probably wouldn't hurt. I have a used huddle hut for birds in the past but heard horror stories about birds getting hurt so now will put a scrap of terry cloth on a small wooden platform mounted in the cage.

Possibly the bird is jealous. Momma is giving all the hand love to the stylus. Ignoring the pretty bird while steadily loving that, that thingy.

With my last bird, when she would eat too many seeds she would sometimes scratch and over preen. I found on holisticbirds website that red palm oil could help. Just a few ccs on pellets or veggies twice a week helped make her beautiful again.

Hello all, I've been a bird brain all my life. We won't get into how long this is. My last bird, a 14 yo Quaker was lost while at the sitters, after a prolonged search I decided to find another bird. Finding no rescues near home I located an IRN breeder nearby. I pick her up this Friday. The bird is...
