Shrek and Fiona meet!

Well, It's done! After quarantine and a couple of weeks staring at each other through the bars I finally got my Shrek into my aviary with my new blue girl Fiona. She is only a year old so I wont be breeding them this year, but I'm so excited! I'm going to let them get used to me and each other and t...

Re: Handraising vs parent raised & human handled

Yeah, I have never tried it with ringnecks but I know it worked awesome with Lovebirds because it's what mum used to do and my pet I got off her was the most awesome snuggly little bird. After they are weaned I'm going to pull them out of the aviary and bring them inside to socialise them and contin...

Re: Handraising vs parent raised & human handled

Thanx for the heads up about the gloves. I was planning on spending a year getting them into a routine which would include all the things I would do (and all the equipment i would use) so that by the time they breed they will be well and truly used to me and the things I need to do in the aviary. Sh...

Re: Handraising vs parent raised & human handled

Sweet! Thanx Melika. I am sort of used to breeding the tinier, more touchy birds like finches and waxbills and you dont go near thier nests with some of them or its completely abandoned. I was semi-confident that parrots were different but its really nice to have another opinion from someone who has...

Re: How about caterpillars?

Yeah, I think maggots would be fine. They are pretty nutritious actually, they just gross alot of people out.

Handraising vs parent raised & human handled

I am going to start breeding my Indian Ringneck next year (not this breeding season because she is still young and I want to give her time to get used to me and Shrek and settle in properly). I have already been approached by someone interested in getting a baby but here is my problem. He wants me t...

Re: How about caterpillars?

Yeah, Shrek didn't have a problem with the livefood. He just went for it. If you think it's going to freak your bird out try decapitating it first (gruesome sounding I know but some people reckon to do that with mealworms all the time cause they have nippers). I have no idea about hornworms in speci...

Re: IRNs and love birds living together.

I have never tried to keep those two sepcies together so I can't tell you for sure but my mum used to breed lovebirds and they can get very territorial and cranky around breeding season so I would say tread with caution. Hope someone comes on that can give you a more definate answer.

Re: Hello from Australia!

Hahaha, yeah, my list is pretty decent as well. I have an array of parrots, finches, doves, and then there is a whole list of 'assorted' as well. I may never get some of them but it's fun to dream. Then there is my list of non feathered creatures including scorpians, more snakes and spiders, dogs, f...

Re: Is Macadamia Safe Perch Wood?

Thanx. I kinda thought it would be ok cause we have the local parrots coming around chewing on it all the time. I just want to be very sure before I put things in the aviary. It's funny when you are setting up a cage you start to remember all the things u need that you forgot u needed. So many littl...

Re: Introduce yourself

Like I said, make all the yummy treats and fun toys be outside his cage. He wont want to stay in there for long when you are eating all his apple and playing with all the fun toys you have. If you can use treats to get him to step onto your hand inside the cage this would also work. All birds are di...

Re: Introduce yourself

Shrek is not the tamest bird in existence so he still tries to bite me. I got him during his bluffing phase and I was so busy at the time that I didnt have the time to put into him to get him completely through it so he still gets nippy. I have found that if you want them to come to you and get used...

Is Macadamia Safe Perch Wood?

My new aviary came with two perches but I would rather just make my own because I don't know what used to be in the aviary and I don't really want to risk it with wood. My question is, does anyone know about branches from a macadamia nut tree as perch wood? We have two macadamia trees in our yard an...

Re: New To Breeding IRN's

I'm in Coffs Harbour in NSW. I was also thinking, if I get the younger hen then she has alot of time to well and truly get used to me before she starts to breed which would make nest inspections less problematic. Since I only have one pair I will be the 'leave them together all year around' type of ...

Shrek Laughs!

Has anyone else had thier bird laugh? Shrek my IRN picked up a noise that sounded very much like a laugh that he would produce whenever we laughed. This in itself was funny enough but he took it to a whole new level once that made me thing he really understood a thing or two about context. One day m...

Re: Hello from Australia!

Shrek is green. When I get him a mate I think it will be blue or maybe lutino. Not sure yet. Not trying to breed for mutations or to sell them for heaps, I just want him to have a fuller life than he has right now and I love babies. Have bred quail, cordon bleu waxbills and Budgies, plus helping my ...

Re: Hello from Australia!

Ratbags they are. Mine is the same. He adores fresh over sunflowers though so I'm lucky. Obviously his first home that he escaped from fed him a decent variety so he isn't picky about his fresh food. He is the cheekiest bird I have owned yet. I love him to bits though, he cracks me up all the time.

Re: Hello from Australia!

Yeah, I feed those seed bar treats to Shrek all the time. He loves them, then when he is finished he uses the plastic rod from the middle to do his mating dance. Just watch too many sunflower seeds. Its like candy and children, they will eat it above all else but it's not 100% the best so keep balan...

Re: Hello from Australia!

That seed is not wrong unless it is the only thing you are feeding the bird ever. I suggested fresh foods as well but she wouldn't listen to me at all. She was the master of all things and did not like listening to advice. I mix wild bird seed with some small parrot food so that Shrek has a larger m...

Re: How about caterpillars?

What about collecting them and feeding them something non-toxic for a few weeks then feed them to the bird? Would that work? Like gutloading insects for spiders. I breed insects for my spiders, quail and axolotls and I know Shrek (my IRN) loves mealworms! You just have to feed them in moderation bec...

Re: New To Breeding IRN's

Ok, so I though I already posted this but I'm not seeing it so it must not have worked. My, basic two rules for introducing any two animals to each other is do it on neutral territory and do it when I'm home for a weekend so I have alot of time to haunt them and make sure they get along. Good to kno...

Re: Creative ideas?

Get a pvc pipe bend and hang it from the bend bit with the point hanging down. You can put small treats like nuts and dried fruit in there and they have to work out how to get it out. Good for making them use thier heads. To keep them guessing you could cover the ends with various materials such as ...

New To Breeding IRN's

So I already introduced myself in the other section. I have an Indian Ringneck that is approximately 4-5yrs old. I got him around 4 yrs ago and his ring wasnt in yet so I have to guess at age. his name is Shrek. When I got him he was in his bluffing stage and since I was working alot I wasn't able t...

Hello from Australia!

Hey, I'm from Australia. I got my IRN when an old boss of mine found him sitting on her pool fence. The silly woman wasnt a fan of me so though I offered to take him she decided to be bull headed and keep him. She had him in a ornamental bamboo cage which I would only put finches in and fed him sole...
