Re: Dexter

Dexter has beautiful tail feathers this year. certainly the best yet. They look just about perfect and this would be the longest time that he has kept them. No stress bars and good clean shafts, with no weak points. He did knock out a shorter tail feather and I took a photo of that to post. It is al...

I've become aware that some birds have killed themselves by chewing up too many fibers from rope perches. I have one rope perch and recently one of my birds has started chewing on it. Re: How to fix a cracked egg?

I trust the glue is non toxic. The egg shells are porous. So whatever you put on the outside will get in there. I am not sure what I would use. I would just replace with a dummy myself. And get rid of the damaged one unless I thought the damage was not a problem. A small dent may not be a issue to w...

Great on you. DNA test if you really want to know sex. You can do this yourself as enough. If you look up online and see what labs you can send samples to, and much cheaper than getting your vet to do this. Pulling two feathers is simple enough and will not hurt the bird. I feel you need to let him grow his flight feathers back in. Then spend time teaching him he can land safely on one leg. Flight is his only way to get around and you stopped that. So it could be the lack of confidence that has caused what you are seeing. I would say he feels very vulnerable right no...

If you use his cage take out all toys. And remove any branches that are not at ground level. If he is on a branch and you brake hard he will get thrown off. As long as they have been pulled out completely then you should see new ones growing in very soon. On the other hand if they have been broken, then these may not be dropped until they go into a molt which I think should be around 6 to 8mths old. This can depend on health and diet. Let me caution you against never caging the bird. The fact is that birds living as pets need to have the skill of living in a cage. Do some research of how to apply Positive Reinforcement Training. This will help you form a strong bond.
Do not do anything that might be negative. And learn to read the birds body language and respect it.
Let the bird set the pace as you move forward.
