Re: bonded pair of lutinos now under my care
OK. "replacing as needed" suggests that taking them before they've reached that number will keep them laying. Well, Sunny and Shy Anne are now copulating like mad. He's being very attentive. They're spending time in the nest box. I'll keep you posted. Thanks so much for all your responses....

baraveryhelles: I didn't understand what is meant by "leave East" in your concluding remark: "For peanuts in the shell leave East."

Re: bonded pair of lutinos now under my care
With my Amazons and with Heckle and Jeckle, the bickering quakers, I do as you have suggested: I take them one at a time, number them and refrigerate for 2 days and then trade them off. It results in one more egg than a normal clutch being laid. And then they lose interest as you say. This is my int...

Re: the male's uric acid and CPK profiles; postural changes?
Thank you, Ellie. It's usually the caretaker who becomes the basket case. The non-human animal may suffer but works with it, doesn't add the agony of thought to the agony of the disease. Sunny remains stable, though I have now collected enough medical opinion from three avian and non-avian vets to p...

Re: bonded pair of lutinos now under my care
Thank you, Melika. Y'now, Fancy Free and Foot Loose broke all our hearts with their courage and adaptability. Foot Loose, during the last breeding cycle at this time last year began to be lethargic and confused, rocking his head back most of the day and not eating much or passing poop, Fancy Free wa...

Re: peanuts
wow you are a GOD to me, now. I am trying to shift all my birds from peanuts to walnuts which have the oil highest in antioxidents, though not a legume like peanuts which complete some incomplete amino acids in the grains (think beans and rice). And while I understand that almonds are lowest in fat ...

Re: the male's uric acid and CPK profiles; postural changes?
Molossus and Ellie: I DO have a couple of vets working on this but none has seen or treated this "stargazing", under Sunny's circumstances, so I'm still looking for information about it from someone who has experienced it. I've been communicating with a Manhattan vet who has extensive expe...

Re: the male's uric acid and CPK profiles; postural changes?
Ellie: In Sunny's case, this is intermittent, only under certain circumstances with absolutely normal posture in all activities. Just when he's at rest, or sleeping.
It is coincident with the intensification of the reproductive phase as well as the night flight previously mentioned. E.

Re: the male's uric acid and CPK profiles; postural changes?
I have spoken with my local vet, not avian, who sees birds and she says that the CPK is not particularily concerning especially since Sunny was captured and then transported for 45 minutes in a hyper-aggitated state, perhaps that even influenced the uric acid. I'm waiting for an avian vet to comment...

Re: peanuts
What a great and comprehensive post ! Thanks very much. "Also, roasting has not been shown to reduce aspergillus spores as of yet." I'll have to go back and find out where I read that roasting minimizes, and post the source. Still, minimizing doesn't get rid of the threat. I remember switc...

Re: peanuts
I've considered the pros and cons of the peanut issue for a long time. I think the bottom line is that they are a highly nutritious legume (not a nut), high in protein, and while high in fat, it is the GOOD fat, and as a legume, peanuts complete some fragmentary amino acids in grains -- think beans ...

bonded pair of lutinos now under my care
I've been caring for a bonded pair of lutinos for more than a year through the local SPCA and finally had to adopt them to keep them from being sent to a "rescue in the basement warehouse of an Army/Navy surplus store, Where the owners were going to rescue 28 finches into a 2 ft by 3 ft "f...

the male's uric acid and CPK profiles; postural changes?
Does anyone know if the male's uric acid and CPK profiles elevate during the reproductive cycle and if postural changes occur? Sunny, the male lutino, is exhibiting a new posture while at rest: The best way I can describe it is to say it is like when we fall asleep at the desk -- his head tips strai...

Re: Quick question
In upstate New York, probably the same latitude as Michigan, my 2 lutinos have been courting for the last 2 weeks, starting about Feb 1. He has not yet mounted her; but she begs for it, and he has been getting closer each day.

Re: Can someone help me please !!!
I've given a great deal of thought to the issues you are raising. I need to say upfront that I think it is unethical to breed birds for lives in cages. No cage is big enough for ANY bird. That said, consider that their primary relationship should be with each other, not with you. Every animal, inclu...
