My IRNs went through a bluffing phase and it was not fun! It didn't last too long, thankfully. Rather than react badly, or get angry, I tried to ignore their behavior. I also learned a good trick to teach them to just bump my finger or hand away when they want to be left alone, rather than bite. So ...

it is very hard to tell the sex of an IRN until they are about 2 years old, as I'm sure you already know. if you have this service available in your part of the world, you could have a bird DNA sexed, which is very reliable. in America this is not very expensive to have done. all of that aside, i ha...

Adopting a parrot is a great thing to do, and considering all the poor birdies out there who need a home, you are doing a great thing to give them a safe, secure and happy place to live. He definitely needs some time to settle in. Ringnecks are not naturally tame birds, so if they aren't handled regularly, they lose their tameness. But it isn't hard to get them comfortable with you! I think I heard that IRNs usually don't start to talk till at least 1 year old? At least IRNs have a pleasant call. My 2 IRNs are about 3 months old and have such a cute squeak. They are gaining volume every day though. But still a cute squeak. I hope they don't pick up on the volume of my Goffins c...

I just started using AviCalm with my Goffins cockatoo. She's a very skittish bird and everything frightens her, but very sweet and cuddly. She was screeching almost constantly the first week I brought her home, I think because she was still adjusting to her new home. I've discovered ways of quieting...

My Goffins cockatoo is a squawker. She always wants to be held constantly and if I walk away she starts screeching. When she does that, I whistle back or talk to her, or pop my head into the room so she can see I'm still there. She has quieted down quite a bit now, as I think she realizes that I'm n...

How long have you had your IRN? If its only a short while, maybe it needs time to adjust? Else you might try some toys or a diet change. But if the little guy is skittish, introduce new things slowly. It can be difficult to introduce a new bird to one that has been living on its own for a while with...

That's great advice, Smallworld, about covering the cage to curb the squawking. In addition to the other handicap IRN, I also brought home (on a trial basis) an 8 year old Goffins cockatoo. She gets so loud, it makes me jump sometimes, and a lot of it is an attention thing. She sits on her cage and ...

I'm thinking separate cages would be best, especially because they'll be spending a lot of time at the bottom of the cage until they get better with climbing around. Also, try adding some sprouted seeds to the mix. Soak the seeds in water over night, then put in a sprouting jar. Shake the jar to get rid of the excess water (they should be damp but not soaked). When they first show signs of sprouting, give them to your bird. The sprouting process cuts down a bit ...

I would say that quote is not very accurate, from everything I've seen and read. Each bird is different though, so there is plenty of variation.
