Re: What a horrible day
You wont believe how many people said to me "its just a bird..." and "You can just get a new one". The problem with both of these statements is the fact that he is not just any bird, he is Rookie and himself and he is also MY bird. I was so nervous when I got him, worried that I ...

Re: What a horrible day
Good News... Rookie is back to his horrible self lol, it turns out that he did have lead poisoning and so far he has cost us a total of $1000 dollars. It was totally worth every penny, much to my husbands dismay. AND it seems I may have a boy! Thank you guys for all your support in this, it was real...

Re: What a horrible day
so Rookie is being treated for lead poisoning, and he has also been wormed. Poor little mite had a really bad infestation. The vet isn't really sure what could be wrong at this point so she is covering all her bases. Soon we will be looking at beak and feather disease. He seems to be getting better,...

Re: What a horrible day
Molassas Hi The good news is that Rookie made it through the night. He doesn't seem to have got better, or with any luck worse. what did the vet diagnose or what symptoms is he/she treating? The vet did full blood work and took xrays. The blood and xrays came back clear, however when she swabbed aro...

What a horrible day
So, I got up this morning and did my usual things like getting my daughter up, having a cup of tea and getting breakfast, when I noticed that my beloved Rookie was not himself. He was sitting on his perch all puffed up and wobbling a little. Whenever he tried to follow me around the cage it was almo...

Re: Calling a bluff
HAHAHA from what I have read, I would have to agree wholeheartedly with you on this MissK, I shall join your crusade to rename the bluff to the attacking phase XD. I like the idea of deflecting the bite, or attempting to distract from the finger. I guess the tough part will be being quick enough. I ...

Re: Calling a bluff
I did read this post, but I was wondering more what to do if he bites and does not let go. I mean how can you ignore a nasty bite that draws blood?

Calling a bluff
So, at what stage in life can I expect the bluffing phase to start? If your bird is biting you hard and drawing blood, how can you make them stop without encouraging it more? (I don't relish the idea of just letting him bite me until he wants to let me go, after all it does hurt) I have yet to exper...

I have figured that I am only a portable seed bowl to Rookie lol, I am hoping that over time he will stop seeing me as a treat giver and more like a friend. It really sucks when the apple of your eye ignores you for some millet XD!! Did anyone have this problem, and did it evolve into something more...

Got a cuddly IRN? Rookie is affectionate as long as it means me not touching him (patting etc) I'm not worried about this i'm just curious as to wether it is a IRN thing to not like being touched or something else.

Re: Biting IRN
Hi Have you tried target training him? My Rookie bit me heaps and untill he figured out that my hands weren't scary and were carrying the yummy treats, he stopped. Now I can spend hours with him training him to do tricks. To target train I like to hold treats in my left fist. A bird will naturally n...

A little goes a long way...
So after the usual teething problems, lots of patience and time with my Rookie I thought I would share a few neat things that he is doing. My little monster now refuses to get back in his cage, racing up my arm and trying to get on my shoulder, where he has discoverd (to my great and utter joy) that...

Pohutukawa tree??
I live in NZ and we have a tree here called Pohutukawa. I was wondering wether the wood would be safe for my stinky. I did some research and found that it is part of the Myrtle family which is NOT safe for parrots, but it is safe for our native parrot the Kakariki (a type of rosella). Its pretty far...

Re: Safe papers for foraging toys?
I live in New Zealand. The pellet thing is a really great idea, i've been putting cupcake trays in his food bowl too, I think he likes the crackle and the fact he can throw them around the cage lol. OH and I have given him a baby rusk (the hard ones you buy from the supermarket) I'm guessing that ri...

Haha! I went to youtube and looked up your videos. Both your birds are so beautiful, and clever!! I was watching Rookie with my Husband last night, Rookie adores him allways clambering across the cage to listen to his voice.. it must be something about men eh. I'm hoping to be able to teach Rookie s...

Re: Pretty Bird, not so nice personality... I think...
Yes it is similar to target training, I am wondering if I should be using a stick or a target instead of my finger. What are your thoughts on clicker training?
One thing that amazes me is how incredibly smart they are! How old is your Janey?

Re: Pretty Bird, not so nice personality... I think...
Yeah he is biting pretty hard, but I think he is doing what Janey used to do to you perhaps just wondering what the fingers are doing there. I have started to touch train him, so far just using my finger for him to touch. I have to hold it a certain way and say "touch". I am worried that I...

Just got my first IRN about 2 weeks ago. I have named him Rookie. He was handreared by the breeder, who happens to be my boss. I watched him handling Rookie (he was even flighty with him) before I took him home. The breeder taught him to step up but from the word go Rookie has always been flighty. E...

Thanks for your reply :D I did take Rookie back to the breeder, who explained that s/he was just "beaking" my hand to get up. The good news is that s/he is now eating millet and seed, and also that s/he seems to have the sweetest personality ever! S/he likes to sit on my hand and fluff up ...

Hi everyone!
I just brought an indian ringneck, which we have named Rookie. I am totally worried about him/her, s/he was handraised, and I am meant to finish the feeding. S/he is getting nippy now (its only been 2 days) So I was wondering if there was something that I did wrong. As a result s/he is not eating......
