Re: How quickly things can go wrong!
Hello all, It has been a whjile since I posted and alot has happened! Wally completely healed about 3 weeks ago. I left a donut shaped collar around him just to remind him to stay away from the wing. One day while i was at work about 2 weeks ago, he reached and gnawed a NEW wound into the axilla (ar...

Re: How quickly things can go wrong!
Wally update! He finished his antibiotics and his 'wound' is only a third of the size, and is just on the surface. It used to be much deeper. He has had two large scabs dry up and come off. I think after this one comes off, it will be a series of smaller scabs until its gone. It is amazing how well ...

Re: How quickly things can go wrong!
Got a call from the vet today, Chlamydia came back negative! So at least all the major infectious bugs are ruled out. Yesterday afternoon Wally took a bath and I took the collar off so he could dry, even though we watched him, he still got to his wing (sneaky little bugger) so we had a little set ba...

Wally has gained 4 grams since sunday so at least we are looking better. Ive gone through three different types of collars to find one that he tolerates most, and doesnt distract him from eating! Giardia came back negative, but still waiting on Chlamydia... This morning he is eating well so I have m...

How quickly things can go wrong!
Hello guys I am the proud owner of a 20 month old male IRN (blue) named Wally. Wally is wonderful to say the least. He began talking at 6 months, gives kisses, is potty trained and a riot to have around at dinner parties etc. About three days ago we noticed he had plucked some feathers under his Rig...

Re: Flock call
In my experience, IRNs have the ability to be very loud, however, you can help them decrease the amount they call. Mine pretty much only calls in the morning when he wants out of the cage and is ready to eat. Otherwise, we usually keep our IRN out and about (he is fully flighted) so unless he cant f...

Re: peanuts
I only offer dry natural peanuts in the shell- as an occaisional treat. Rule of thumb, if the IRN wouldnt normally encounter a food in the wild, dont offer it to them in captivity. I pretty much apply this to any type of altered food unless I prepare something just for him like veggie/corn bread or ...

I am a strong believer in "well visits". Did you take him to the vet for a checkup when you first got him? i recommend doing this to help diagnose any problems he may be bringing home with him. At this point, its possible he is stressed, its possible he has mites or some other skin irritan...

if you havent already, take him to an avian vet for a regular checkup and they will/can test everything. There are lots of bird diseases and ailments.
Hes probobly just a little guy, but Id rather be safe than sorry!

try to give them the most consistent schedule possible. that means putting them to bed at the same time, in the same fashion everyday. I wouldnt cover the cage to quiet her. talk to your bird and ask him questions. then answer the questions. give him choices of how to answer. Whats wrong>? are you hungry are you sleepy? etc, Eventually if your bird is smart enough he will start to learn context as well as the words. My bird will ask me whatcha doing? when he sees me wor...

let your IRN chose when she is ready to interact. Put her in the room with you, and open the cage. let her go back in the cage whenever she wants and NEVER put your hands in her cage to grab her. It has to be HER territory. Eventually she will become curious (IRNS are very curious and fast learners....

Re: occasional biting?
A few things to consider: Females have a tendency to bond to one person in the family- looks like she chose your hubby! The best way to train a biting bird is to do nothing at all. If she bites, no matter where, or how bad it is, dont react at all. Act normal, go into the other room and cry like a b...
