when they start getting curious enough to start picking things up with their beaks is a good indicator. Some start picking at the bedding or droppings ect. And pretty muchly if there is things like corn kernels and fresh peas that they can have a play with they eventually work it out that its edibl...

handfeeding and weaning?

I am handfeeding three chicks now. They are 28 days old, and I am following the "handfeeding agenda" that Melika wrote. But I wonder at what age do you use to intruduce "real" food? What to start with? Last time I handfeed any bird was two years ago, and I really doesent remember...

Wow aviarys like that must be awesome! We don´t have that kind of zoo´s here in scandinavian, we have a coupple but not that big I think. Love beeing in open aviarys were you can sit and watch the birds just flying around. My partner must always drag me from thouse places, I can stay forever there.

I had to pull my two IRN´s at the age of 5 weeks and handfeed them. The hen was beginning to pluck the poor chicks so I had no alternativ but pulling them. I had another more experienced breeder who showed my what to do and all. It was not so easy beeing the first time fore me and the IRN already re...

I will measure the first aviary an let you know, its big enough to put a couple of dividers in. What you may have to watch is the bonded pairs may gang up on the others. See mine are all young and at the time only oscar and skye had been in together, but skye was the main problem chasing the other ...

I had six in the one aviary, I watched them pretty closely and ended up moving skye out (hen) and cheeky (juvenile c). Skye is very dominant and cheeky was getting chased by oscar(c). I dont know how you would go with established pairs though. How old are your cock birds and hens? How big was your ...

More than two IRN in the same cage/aviary??

I just wonder, how do you keep your IRN´s? I do have mine in pairs. I did once put in a male in an outdoor aviary with two others a male and female. It ended up in disaster. They killed the poor guy. That misstake I will not do again! But it would help a lot if I could keep some of them together. I ...

I do agree that you should not let the temerature drop big time and then go back to normal warm temperature again the next day. But as I sayed, keeping them at low temperature like 45 Farenheit or 5-10 celcius is not a problem. But it should be in a sheltred area and a dry place. On stabil temperatu...

How to wean the little one´s?

I´m wondering at what age you intruduce "real" food to the baby´s that you handreare and how to do this best? When I look at Melika´s post and hand-feeding agenda, it say´s from 6 week´s just feed them one time in the evening. But I pull my baby´s five day´s ago and they were 35 dags at that time. T...

I can just tell you my experence, I locate my IRN in a cooler place in the winter they all take it verry well. If you can, just for sure, you can put in a heater a fan or something like that. Just to keep the temerature above zero, 5-10 degrees celcius is just fine. And of course feed them more fatt...

Thanks Julie! That explains the hole thing. I do only warm water, but it´s a big job keeping the formula warm during the hole feeding process. (Especelly if you are new at feeding and have two frightend chicks to feed.) But I just finished the dinner meel and they seemed okey with it, and I´m reliev...
