Hi and welcome Jack, The best thing I can say to you is, give your new fids time, don't expect too much too soon, they will need time to get use to their new surroundings and you. Use good training techniques, be verbal when training and always treat them for good behaviour. Plenty of fresh fruit an...

Welcome to the group Pat. If you have had him/her only a few weeks, i would say that he/she just isn't use to you yet. You should look up some info on training techniques. You must distract the bird, it sounds like you leave before your husband, or someone is there after you leave, so I suggest you get them to take the bird for a walk to another room in the house while you slip out. The other option is to do what I do, when it is time for me to go, I get his favorite ...

Hello, 7 weeks old would mean that your baby is not fully weaned as yet and maybe the behaviour is his wanting to be fed. The other issue may be that your baby (if fledged (flying)) already is infact 10 weeks or more old and therefore weaned and is scared of you. Was the bird hand raised ? or from t...

Hard to say, they may never pair. It all depends on them, give them time and wait until it is breeding season there, they will probably change their behaviour at that time. If it is already breeding season you may need to wait until the next. Its all a matter of time, but sorry, how much is totally ...

Oh and as a new owner, make sure you don't cook with teflon coated pans or use the self clean on your oven as the fumes can kill. Birds have very sensitive respiratory systems. Smoke, perfumes, sprays, oil burners are all things you should be aware of not using in close vicinity of your fid. :-) And...

Go check out the Diet and Housing section of the site. It really depends on if its parent raised, or hand raised and then how well the human does weaning if its hand raised. Usually you can safely say by 10-12 weeks the baby will be fully weaned and fledged. I wouldn't say at 2 months (8 weeks though) not fully.

At two months old (8 weeks), I wouldn't say it would be fully weaned. The "fully" weaned and fledged age is around 10 - 12 weeks.

Re: how to tell the age of a indian ringneck

Yep .. Julie is right Lutino (yellows) get very red beaks indeed. IRN also are fully fledged by approx 10 weeks, therefore, as early as 10 weeks + will be fully feathered. The beak will also be rather red by 10 weeks once weaned onto good fruit and veg, so it sounds like the bird may need some good ...

Re: What is the best bird to get a pet for a child?

I would go for a handraised cockatiel. They are loving, small enough and the bite is not damaging if the bird does happen to have a bit of a go in a bad mood, not that I have really seen this from a hand raised cockatiel. Mine love to be cradled in your hand and scratched with the other hand, rubbed...

Having them close by you, within sight is the best thing. Alot of loud calling could simply be them trying to locate their flock. In my opinion toweling seems to be the better option, as gloves look so much like big scary hands, I believe it can give them a complex about hands and you don't want that. Toweling is a softer option for the bird and the towel is the object that threatens them not your hands.

Just my opinion though
