That is something to worry about. Last winter we had a tiger on the loose here in Los Angeles--yes, a tiger. Some idiot's illegal 'pet' had escaped and kept being spotted out in the suburbs until it was tranquilized and captured by the authorities. Two years ago a local lake was fenced off for six m...

And I'm right there with you on the reccoons, bastard_x5. They nest up in the attic, swim and wash their paws and food in the pool, and they love nothing better than feasting on every goldfish they can get their little paws on in the koi pond. But they sure are cute when they take their little babie...

As long as there is food available and even the smallest access mice and rats are going to be a problem. With a bird there will always be food available . It does sound as though someone wants to 'play house......' Charlie Parker is also obsessed with one of the kitchen cupboards--the one that holds the birdseed and the peanuts. The door doesn't close completely and he's always poking his head in or gesturing to us to help him check it out. After mont...

Charlie Parker wouldn't stop making air raids on the dinner salads tonight so I finally put him in his cage for a timeout and boy did we have one mad little birdie for the next half hour. Poppy Seeds?
Are poppy seeds safe for birds? I've seen poppies listed as a poisonous plant and yet the seeds are included as ingredients in several birdie bread recipes and in wild birdseed mixes. Edible poppy seeds come from the plant papaver somniferum, commonly known as the opium or breadseed poppy, and do co...

Like clockwork Charlie Parker starts chatting and ringing his bell at 9:20PM, then climbs up on my shoulder while I change his papers, wash his dishes, and put all the toys back into the toy basket. Then we have a fruit snack and he hops over to peck my longterm houseguest on the nose, then gives me...

While Charlie Parker isn't aggressive he does like to eat clothes. A lot. Anything with buttons, zips, a hanging thread, tag, or little hole is an invitation to destroy. It was a losing battle trying to train him not to chew, plus it's so damn cute when he climbs inside my shirt or into my pockets, ...

Blackberries are in season so I bought baskets and baskets of them but after spending several hours cleaning up the stains, purple poop, and a very happy little purple-faced bird I had second thoughts about feeding them to the little monster again. After making blackberry ice cream I had tons of the...

That is hilarious. Charlie Parker has always HATED every vacuum--the brown one upstairs, the little hand vac (every bird owner's best friend ,) the shop vac, and especially the red one downstairs. Charlie Parker came home with me when he was about 12 weeks old--eating solid food on his own but still being handfed twice a day. I was wondering about ice - is it safe to allow the birds to play with an ice cube or two? Charlie Parker is fascinated by it and I we've been having record heat here so I floated one in his "wading pool" this weekend along with his usual bath toys. He tries to catch it in his beak (usuall...

Obsession with teeth?
Okay, I thought that Charlie Parker had a case of the spring hornies and had fallen madly in love with me, but now he's acting weird to my friends as well. He is completely obsessed with teeth--he looks into your eyes and then tries and tries to beak your front teeth. He'll bite them gently and won'...

Charlie Parker is almost a year old and we're dealing with his first big moulting with lots of pin feather scratching from both of us and frequent baths (once a day from me with the spray bottle, and sometimes three or four swims in his water dish. ) I'm wondering if anyone else's bird chews his fea...

Charlie Parker's favorite game is keep-away: He stands on the edge of his cage top and I bring one of his golf balls close. Charlie Parker was a dirty bird for a while--he'd hop in his water dish and give himself a bath at most once every week or two. Is it just me anthropomorphising or do birds smile when they are happy? I could swear (and my houseguest agrees) that my IRN appears to have a smile on his beak when he is happy and/or satisfied. Does anyone else see this?
