Feather plucking stopped by a Birdy Buddy

I have a cockatiel hen that started feather plucking under her wings about 6 years ago. I had tried EVERYTHING I could think of, in addition to many ideas I read about. Nothing seemed to work, so I gave up, thinking that it was just something that I was going to have to tolerate. My experience has s...

Sharing my flock...

I had an IRN but he now lives happily with a friend of ours. Someday I will own another. Currently, I've got a blue-fronted amazon and 4 cockatiels. We (my husband & I) totally enjoy our flock. They're like the comic relief of our lives. When things are good they provide hours of fun; and when t...

Wow, what a warm welcome back. Thanks all for your loving support. To answer some of your questions: I don't know how Cha-Cha is doing. The friend who now has him has stopped communicating with my husband and me. But, if all's going as before, he's happy as a clam because that guy was spoiling the c...

Wow, Site's getting better!

Hi, All:
I just had to have my account reactivated due to inactivity. Obviously I haven't been here for a while, but I wanted to check in. This site has improved 10 fold since my last visit! ;) Great job, everyone. I'm looking forward to the day when I can get my next ringneck.

No luck with new speech!

When my IRN, ChaCha, still lived with my husband and I, I couldn't teach him a new word at all! Not through the 5 or so years he lived with us. He now lives happily with a friend of ours who wants to teach him some new words but also is having no luck. Currently he says: Hello What are you doing? Co...

No I no longer have my IRN but a friend of ours does. I'm happy to say that he is very happy in his new home and the two of them seem totally cut out for one another! :)

droppings

Just a suggestion or two regarding the droppings: I've used a towel or a bandana held onto my shirt with a pin. That way when your together time is over you can just throw it in the laundry and wash it. Another thing you can do is use an old shirt as a smock or buy a smock or two that you can interc...

Other drinks:

I have given my birds some yogurt, usually plain or vanilla, diluted with water. You can't leave it in the cage longer than a couple of hours though because the yogurt will spoil otherwise. They seem to enjoy it. If you're providing water in a dish you can try some other flavours with fruit, but sin...

Just a follow up: I've been talking to our friend who adopted ChaCha and things are going very well with. Wow, Barbara, Birdie sure sounds clever? Did you teach Birdie all of that stuff? IRN & cockatiels

I have 4 cockatiels and 1 IRN (until recently - he moved to a new home) but I didn't house them together. I don't suggest it as a good idea simply because the IRN is a bigger bird that the cockatiel and if they were to get into a serious squabble the cockatiel could get injuried severely. As a matte...

Molting

Once a year seems to be the time for IRN. Usually in the summer - I don't know if that's the usual time for the wild birds but it seems to make sense to me. I mean, if you're going to be half-naked it might as well be while it's warm out ! The duration seems to be about 6-8 weeks. Hope this helps.

Hi, prettygirl: I know what you mean about the chewing. My IRN, ChaCha, likes to test the wrinkles in my clothes to see if there's any flesh located closely underneath. paddyowner: I agree with Jodie. Birds usually bite out of fear. I realize that your bird was hand reared but perhaps s/he is still nervous about the new surroundings. sooty, I think that this is quite normal. My IRN makes the cutest mumbling, sighing and chirping sounds while he's getting settled for the night. Cathy, I seriously thought about what you said so here's what I did: I took a playgym and put it on a table. Then I took all of the cockatiels out of their cage. I provided 2 branch-bridges: 1 went to the playgym and the other went to the cockatiel cage. Then I let ChaCha out of his cage. He made a ...

Okay all, ready for this one? ChaCha's new screaming angle is this: he just does it constantly until he gets his way even when he's covered up! Seems I've created a monster! Things with ChaCha are somewhat improved. But only slightly. I have moved his cage to a nice sunny spot where he can see all the people that walk by on our street, which has a lot of foot traffic, and he can see if anyone is on our front porch. Yes, I feel ChaCha is bonded with me because when I take him out of his cage he sings, talks and whistles to me. Also he allows me to pet him on his head and scratch his neck.
