Yes, it's very normal. Sometimes they like to sort of suck out the liquid and toss the rest. They can be quite piggish but it's difficult for an active bird eating healthy food to actually become overweight so you shouldn't need to worry about it. :)

Hi Kyria! May I ask why you are against pellets? I had the same opinion as I always like to think it is more beneficial to fill up with natural goodies (e.g. fruit and veg) than other things but on my recent Vet visit, the avian recommended (and looked at me as if I was mad for not feeding pellets)...

Why not try offer seed and nuts? Seeds and nuts provide many nutrients and are a good part of a well-rounded diet.

Macaws in particular often require seeds/nuts to keep their weight up. Perhaps your bird simply has a higher metabolism and needs the extra fat.

As far as dried lemongrass being toxic, it is not and wouldn't harm in that way. I wouldn't want to put a bunch of fresh grass in, as you could unintentionally grow mold/mildew- but I live in Florida so it might just be a local concern.
