Re: moody female - but it's not breeding season

I'm sorry, i shouldn't expect you to understand but it's easy to just assume everybody knows what you're talking about sometimes! The issue i was experiencing had nothing to do with entertainment within the cage. I realise you aren't to know this but i really think you shouldn't just speculate blind...

Not at all Ash. If she is clipped and wants to leave my side she will make it clear, and move. I don't force her to sit with me - i don't force her to do anything. Re: My IRN likes to bite me

Birds are very switched on to body language. You can't blame a bird for biting you if you don't see the signs - "he's had enough scratches" for example. This only comes with experience and trial and error, expect a few bites along the way. Sometimes though, especially as you're not the initial carer...

InTheAir, not so! My female is an almost completely different personality between clipped/flighted. When flighted, she is more aggressive, less interested in interaction (seems to prefer sitting ontop her cage doing nothing to interacting), very disobedient (refusing to return to cage etc and flying...

This sounds very similar to my bird.
She's learned "Whatchya doin," her first words infact (allbeit the whatchya part is a little rough)
But she hasn't seemed to learn anymore and she rarely says it...

With my bird, when she was bluffing/biting i first had to learn what the bite meant. A parrot only has one way to tell you to back off if you don't know their body language and that's to bite you. I worked on the principal that if the bite was for no reason, and just out of pure bluffing i would giv...

Re: my bird wont come out of its cage

Yes i read your other posts aswell. I think you need to work on your respect for your bird (if i may be so bold). It sounds to me like you need to chill out and back off - and give your bird some time and rest. These are smart animals! They're not like dogs, they're not here to please their owners (...

Re: giving up on my irn

Sounds like you have the kind of bird most here would like.
Sorry, but you're giving up on it because it's quiet? You've had it a fortnight - he's not even settled in yet!
Maybe a parrot isn't the ideal pet for you????

Re: Teaching the 'Up' Command for Finger training

Man i must've got lucky because my bird has never had any issues stepping up to my finger! I don't need to say anything to him, i just present my finger and he'll step onto it - or if he's being a little crabby i might have to lift up slightly and touch under his tummy and he'll step up. Only time h...

Re: Strange sleep habits

Hey,
My bird does this also, it doesn't seem to be causing him any harm.
I'm a pretty new parrot owner, but i try and think about their natural habitat when something concerns me - and i'd imagine they would naturally sleep like this occasionally in the trees.

Hope that helps :)

Re: For male IRN owners

Hi Carmen,

thankyou for your reply! Yes it gives me a little bit of an idea...

Funny little birds these! Seems nothing is "normal" for them in terms of what they'll do and when!

Makes it more interesting i guess!

For male IRN owners

At what age did your bird start to display by flaring of his shoulders? My bird is about four months old and i'm so curious about the gender! There is a faint darker green tinge where the ring will be, but it's way too early yet. I know it's not specific proof, but i'm curious if there's an age when...

Re: very dark beak

I'm a new owner as well, so i'm not exactly sure - but my little guy has a normal coloured bear except for the tip of the top half which is basically black as well.
He seems fine enough, so i'm not worried about it.. :D

Re: Hello All!

Hey guys, well here's a bit of an update. Sam and i are turning into good friends i think :) He's pretty chilled out, and i've succesfully trained him out of 90% of biting. He is very excited to preen me, but sometimes i think he gets a little over excited and gives my ear/lip/arm a nip. He especial...

Re: Hello All!

:) Thanks! That's awesome!

After reading some posts on this forum i'm thinking i must be lucky to have made so much progress in only a week! I must've found a nice bird.

He was the only one at the store out of about 6-7 that followed me around the cage so i picked him for it 8)

Re: Hello All!

Thanks guys!
I might just be a paranoid new parent, but today he's been sitting on me and lifting one foot at a time up under his feathers and standing on the other. But he's been alternating between feet... Any ideas why this would be?

Re: Hello All!

Oh, and I should say i was very impressed today as i'm normally at work but had the day off, and i fell asleep on the lounge lying flat on my back with Sam sitting on my chest (pecs area). 45 minutes later i woke, and he was still sitting there quietly and chilled out. He could've taken the opportun...

Hello All!

Hey guys! My name's Matt, and i'm a proud new owner of a 10 week old green ringneck :) Firstly, what a great website and kudos to those who run it! It helped me in deciding to buy one of these funny little parrots!!! A little about me. I'm 25, from a small town called Coffs Harbour, in Australia. I ...
