Re: 1st words today
The good: Snow has learned to imitate about 4 different versions of laughter: one from me, one from my flatmate, two from the radio. He's not shy about it either, so I get to show him off to my friends. The bad: Let's just say I don't need a burglar alarm anymore. At least he hasn't figured out how ...

Re: Parrot did WHAT?!?
Not near as cool as birds flying through doors but Snow used to... 1) pull out the grate over his litter tray from inside his cage and escape out into the room through the gap. I now clip the grate to one of the cage-sides from the outside with a carabener. 2) Try to bathe in his water dish which is...

Re: Two Steps Back, One Leap Forward
Can we take it one step further, "rebellion" or ....? Rebellion as in, He knows what it is I'm asking him to do (because he's done it before and still does it when he feels like it), but because he doesn't feel like it he avoids it. Plus, since we have now gone back to getting very nice, ...

Re: Two Steps Back, One Leap Forward
In my case, Sanjay has always been fully flighted, and never stick trained or hand trained, so when He avoided going into his cage, it was because the cage was too small and he hated it. The fact that when he was in the cage he would pace up and down a perch was the giveaway. Yes, I had that same p...

Two Steps Back, One Leap Forward
I've recently had a sweet and simple reminder that, just like in any relationship, sometimes with IRNs you have to move back to move forward. Snow is - or was - stick-trained... that is, until I let his beautiful wings grow out to their full length and he learned just how easily he could avoid me tr...

Re: why is it?
It has been mentioned in earlier posts on this topic, but I also think the reason many people may find training an IRN difficult is a matter of "perspective" and "expectations". People, especially those who may be "stepping up" from an "easier-to-tame" species...

Re: Of Tomatos and Mirrors
Yes, I read the same thing about tomatos possibly being too acidic and that they should only be fed in moderation... which was why (and I should have said) I only fed them as a very rare treat. And until he went to this friend's house, he never had a problem with them... I suspect that she must have...

Of Tomatos and Mirrors
I have not been a parrot-mommy very long, but in my brief time and hours of research it seems to me there is quite a bit of debate on these two topics... well, at least the mirror part. Some have argued that you should not give your single bird a mirror because it will make the bonding process harde...

Re: Parrot sleeping at bottom of cage HELP
What kind of new perch? If it's a fancy one, maybe he's scared of it?

Re: Considering giving up my bird. Hoping for advice.
Hey SilverGull, How are things now? May I just say, Snow and I were at EXACTLY the point you describe here about three months ago. In fact, I was feeling pretty much the same, wondering if I was doing the right thing by him. He wouldn't come out of the cage, was terrified of me and on the odd occasi...

Weird Birdie-Bedtime Stories
Ever since an overnight stay at the vet for some X-rays to try to deal with a breathing issue (which turned out to be food-related), Snow now sleeps hanging off of the vertical sides of his parrot-palace. It looks totally uncomfortable to me, and I wonder how he manages to stay up there all night......

Re: Big bad birdie afraid of a grape!
That would so make sense, Sanjays! He is FOREVER rubbing his beak against everything, especially after he eats a messy meal! It's seriously like he's saying "Eeww, I'm all covered in carrot/grape/apple etc". Even after he's gotten all of it off! (And no, he isn't sick. He's current o...

Re: Big bad birdie afraid of a grape!
My little IRN Snow doesn't have any "food phobias", but every time I get a cold and my nose gets stuffy he freaks out. Fluttering, squawking, the works. It's like he doesn't recognize me when my voice is different. Then he gets friendly again when my nose clears up.

Re: New owner
Hi my name is Liz and I brought home my lutino IRN Snow about 7 months ago now. I have one tip for fellow newbies like me: Spare your fingers!!! For various reasons, I bought Snow aviary-raised . I knew it would be a challenge, since I'd only ever had budgies and cockatiels before, but I was eager t...
